[LUNA] Mounting an external HD - LVM, dm-crypt, Oh My!

I'm about ready to turn in my Nerd Card. I should know how to do this. I could really use a good tutorial on "So, you've been given this drive. Here's how to know what filesystems are on it, if there's an LVM (or other volume technology), if any filesystems are encrypted, and if they're encrypted (and you know the password!) how to get to it."

I'm not an IT guy, just a (mostly) knowledgeable geek.

The specific problem that led me to my frustration:

I'm trying to mount an external HD via a SATA to USB adapter. I *think* the part that's giving me fits is either LVM or encryption, but I'm not 100% certain.

The drive was created from an RHEL6 kickstart file, specifying that the swap and / partitions are encrypted (not /boot). During installation, I left the encryption password blank.

When I connect the drive via USB, 'fdisk -l' shows all three partitions. However, I can't even mount the /boot partition. Mount gives an error about 'bad filesystem type'.
