[LUNA] Ubuntu upgrade

For future reference, what Bob said is still relevant. Grub is the de-facto standard boot loader now (there are exceptions, of course) and it also allows you to get to the boot menu and edit the kernel line. This is configured in grub.conf (hiddenmenu and delay are 2 relevant configuration options). I'm less familiar with the other (not LILO nor grub) bootloaders, but I'll bet that they have similar capabilites.

If you can't get that to work for whatever reason (e.g. the system boots too quickly), you can use a rescue boot disk. I've been partial to SystemRescuCD and Parted Magic, but there are many of them including the Ubuntu install disk itself. Once you boot the rescue disk, you can mount the hard drive, and examine the logs.
