Well think I am going to punt and say I am screwed.  I have used control already delete to get to a promp.  Tried several things with no luck.  Will just have to rebuild system.

The way you used to do that was to interrupt the boot process (by pressing tab before the boot starts) and add the word "single" to the kernel arguments using your boot manager.

Once you're in single user mode, you should be able to dig through your logs and, after bringing up some services, even use apt to remove and upgrade packages that might be causing problems.

Keep us posted.

It just stays at that screen. I waited over an hour and no luck.  If I hit the power button the screen goes away and I see that it is stopping services.  Is there a way that I can boot into my system.  I thought if I could get it to boot to a prompt I might could do apt-get upgrade and that might fix things.
