I have gone to two websites for programs that make bootable flash drives.

and

http://www.pendrivelinux.com/

Linux LIve USB Creator will install a supported Linux distribution. 
Some allow persistence, and there is the possible option of running in
Virtual Box  on top of Windows.

YUMI from Pendrivelinux will allow multiple distributions and utilities
on a large flash drive.  You DO have to collect them!

Knoppix 7.4.2 (and others, top) can make a bootable flashdrive while it
is running.
